Stumpy
Mascot Development
Stumpy the mascot became a local phenomenon and viral sensation when he was introduced as the official race mascot of the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile and 5K in Washington, DC.
As a member of the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile organizing committee, in 2024 I was responsible for bringing Stumpy to life as part of our “Year of Stumpy” celebration. I developed the character, built out the mascot program, designed and illustrated the marketing graphics, coordinated the launch, and worked step-by-step with our Broadway costume designer who created the costume to match our vision.
As word spread that Stumpy the tree would soon be removed, our just-launched mascot became a sensational part of the news cycle.
Throughout race weekend we distributed 7,000 “I met Stumpy!” stickers and 2,000 Stumpy trading cards.
Stumpy guest starred in the Presidents Race at the Washington Nationals Blossoms and Baseball game. The tables were turned on George Washington, securing a big win for Teddy Roosevelt.
Stumpy made a surprise appearance on the April 17, 2024 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show.
Stumpy has since participated in events across DC including the Capital Pride Parade.
The costume was created by the amazing team at Randy Carfagno Productions in New York City.
Stumpy the tree was removed in late Spring 2024 as part of a $133 million restoration of the Tidal Basin seawall, but his spirit lives on as the official race mascot of the Credit Union Cherry Blossom.
